Product Hunt Launch Rules in 2026: Cost, Who Can Launch, Best Day and Time

Launching on Product Hunt is free, anyone with a week-old personal account can do it, the day starts at 12:01 AM Pacific, and you can relaunch after two months — not six. Every rule, sourced, plus the 2026 upvote numbers by weekday.

Most "how to launch on Product Hunt" posts were written in 2023 and still quote rules that have since changed. The relaunch gap is the clearest example: the number everyone repeats is six months, and Product Hunt's own help center now says two. This page answers the questions people actually type into Google — is it free, can anyone launch, what day, what time, how often — with the current rule, where it comes from, and the 2026 numbers behind it.

Every rule below was checked against Product Hunt's own launch guide and help center on 25 October 2026. Where Product Hunt contradicts itself, we say so.

Is launching on Product Hunt free?

Yes. Launching on Product Hunt costs nothing, and there is no paid launch tier that buys featuring or a better position. Product Hunt's FAQ says the platform is "100% free to use," and its help center answers "No — launching on Product Hunt is free."

The only thing Product Hunt sells is advertising, and it is not a launch product. According to Product Hunt's ad campaigns help article, self-serve display campaigns run on budgets of $5,000–$10,000 and managed campaigns start at $10,000 — and advertising during your own launch is not permitted. If somebody offers to sell you a "Product Hunt launch package," they are selling their own time or, worse, votes. Paying for upvotes is grounds for a permanent ban (more on that below).

You will see "Pro" and "Super Pro" plans quoted on a few third-party pages. We could not find either on Product Hunt itself, so treat them as out of date.

Can anyone launch on Product Hunt?

Yes, with two conditions. You need a personal Product Hunt account — the platform does not allow company or brand accounts to post products or comment — and newly created accounts have to wait one week before they can post. Product Hunt states both in its launch guide.

What you launch has to qualify too. Product Hunt wants products that are new, or that have had substantive updates since their last launch, and that people can actually use today. Its featuring guidelines (dated 10 March 2026) say it only features products that are currently available, and that waitlists are not featured unless they give immediate access. Blog posts, lists and documents do not count as products. A closed beta is "usually not a good fit."

The practical consequence: create your account today, not the night before launch. The one-week wait catches more first-time makers than any other rule.

Do you need a hunter to launch on Product Hunt?

No. Product Hunt explicitly encourages makers to hunt (post) their own products, and paying somebody to hunt for you is against its guidelines. Product Hunt says 79% of featured posts were self-hunted. The "find a famous hunter" advice dates from an era when hunters with large followings got their followers notified; it no longer gives a post any special treatment.

The Product Hunt homepage shows featured products by default; everything else is only visible if a visitor switches the feed to "All." Featuring is a human editorial decision — the team reviews every submission, and its guidelines say featuring decisions are final. Product of the Day is then picked from the featured products only.

Product Hunt does not publish its featuring rate, but Hunted.space's Pulse tracker counts every post. Its numbers show how much harder featuring has become:

PeriodShare of posts featured
All time22.8% (136,909 of 599,435)
202417%
20256%
2026 so far4%
Last 30 days (to 25 Oct 2026)4.9% (915 of 18,675)

Roughly one launch in twenty reaches the homepage in 2026. That single number matters more than any timing trick: if your post is not featured, the day and hour you picked barely register. It is also the main reason founders now launch on several smaller platforms instead of betting a whole launch on one — we compare the options in Product Hunt alternatives in 2026.

What time does Product Hunt launch day start?

A Product Hunt launch day starts at 12:01 AM Pacific Time and runs for 24 hours. Product Hunt's launch FAQ calls 12:01 AM PT "the best time to launch for makers that are planning ahead," because a post scheduled for the first minute of the day gets the full 24 hours on the board.

In other time zones, 12:01 AM Pacific is 07:01 UTC while US daylight time is in effect (mid-March to early November) and 08:01 UTC the rest of the year. That makes it 08:01 in London almost all year — except for the few weeks when the US and UK change their clocks on different dates — and 12:31 or 13:31 in India. Check the exact date you launch. Expect to be awake for the first several hours, which is when early comments shape how your page reads to everyone who arrives later.

Third-party guides widely report that Product Hunt hides upvote counts and shuffles the order for the first four hours of the day. Product Hunt shows this as an on-site notice rather than a documented rule, so treat it as reported behaviour: it means an early lead is invisible, and nobody can see who is "winning" until mid-morning Pacific time.

What is the best day to launch on Product Hunt?

Saturday, if your goal is a top-five finish; a weekday, if your goal is the most visitors. Weekends have far fewer launches and need fewer upvotes to rank, while weekdays carry more traffic and more competition. Product Hunt's own answer is "the day on which you're most prepared," but its launch guide also reports that weekend launches received 15% more "Visit" clicks than weekday launches.

The most useful hard numbers come from Hunted.space's monthly history, which averages the upvotes needed to reach each rank, by weekday. September 2026, across 710 featured products:

DayUpvotes for #1Upvotes for top 5Upvotes for top 10
Monday446329233
Tuesday501345239
Wednesday440300219
Thursday414307224
Friday444326235
Saturday322221164
Sunday349252197

Tuesday was the hardest day to win and Saturday the easiest, by a wide margin: a top-five finish on a Saturday took about a third fewer upvotes than on a Tuesday. August 2026 shows the same shape, with Wednesday briefly the hardest day (376 upvotes for the top five) and Saturday again the easiest (226).

A separate analysis of 4,962 top-ranked 2026 launches, posted on Product Hunt by Databox, found the same pattern from the other direction: about 30 top-ranked launches a day on Tuesdays against about 11 on Saturdays.

How to use this: a Saturday top-five badge is real, it is cheaper, and it looks the same on your landing page as a Tuesday one. A Tuesday launch is the better choice only if you have an audience large enough to compete for the top spots and you want the higher weekday traffic that comes with them.

How often can you launch on Product Hunt?

Wait at least two months between launches of the same product. Product Hunt's help center sets a two-month minimum between posts for the same product, company or root domain, and a relaunch also needs a significant update — a new mobile app, or a complete redesign that adds functionality. A new UI on its own or a pricing change does not qualify.

Two things cause confusion here. First, most guides still say six months; that was the old rule and it is out of date. Second, Product Hunt's own launch guide FAQ says you can launch "as often as you have new significant product iterations available," which sounds like no waiting period at all. Read together, the help-center rule is the operative one: two months is the floor, and the update has to be significant regardless of how long you wait.

How many upvotes do you need to get Product of the Day?

About 400–500 upvotes on a weekday and 320–350 on a weekend, based on Hunted.space's September 2026 averages for the #1 spot. Product of the Day is not purely an upvote count, though — Product Hunt selects it with what it calls a "confidential algorithm" across the day's featured products, and votes are not weighted equally.

That last point is where Product Hunt contradicts itself. One of its launch pages lists "all upvotes are equal" as a myth-buster, while a Product Hunt staff post from 2026 says the opposite: every vote counts for a different number of points, and a brand-new account with no history counts for zero. The staff post is newer and more specific, so plan around it. A hundred upvotes from friends who signed up that morning are worth very little.

For scale, Product Hunt's own Q2 2026 report puts the average at about 190 upvotes per launch.

Can you ask people to upvote your Product Hunt launch?

No. Asking specifically for upvotes is against Product Hunt's policies, and contests or giveaways that reward upvotes can get a product unfeatured. Ask people to visit the launch and leave a comment or feedback instead. Linking directly to your Product Hunt page is fine — Product Hunt says there is no penalty for it and that it encourages it.

The penalties are not theoretical. Product Hunt says products caught breaking the rules will be unfeatured or removed, and makers who pay for upvotes or run upvote giveaways may be permanently banned. Its systems neutralize purchased votes, so a bought vote costs you money and counts for nothing even before anyone notices.

Can you schedule a Product Hunt launch in advance?

Yes, up to one month ahead, from the post's launch settings. There is also a "Launch now" option that publishes immediately. The old "Coming soon" (upcoming) pages, which collected followers before a launch, are gone, so the lead-up has to happen on your own channels.

What do you need to prepare for a Product Hunt launch post?

Product Hunt's preparing-for-launch page lists the fields and their limits:

FieldRequirement
NameThe product name only, no description, no emoji unless it is part of the name
Tagline60 characters maximum
Description500 characters maximum
Launch tagsUp to 3
LinkYour real URL, no shortened or UTM links
ThumbnailRequired, square, 240×240 recommended, under 3 MB (GIFs do not autoplay)
GalleryAt least 2 images, 1270×760 recommended
VideoOptional, YouTube only, not private
ShoutoutsUp to 3 products you used to build yours
Maker's first commentRecommended — 70% of Product of the Day, Week and Month winners since 2021 posted one

Note the link rule: no UTM parameters. If you want to measure launch-day traffic, rely on the producthunt.com referrer in your analytics rather than a tagged URL.

Write the tagline last. Sixty characters is short enough that the first draft almost always describes the category ("AI-powered invoicing for freelancers") rather than the outcome a visitor wants, and the tagline is what every reader — and every AI assistant summarising the day's launches — sees first. Our startup launch checklist covers the rest of the preparation, including what to have ready on your own site before the traffic arrives.

Is Product Hunt still worth it in 2026?

For most first-time makers, it is worth doing once and worth doing well, but it is no longer enough on its own. With about one post in twenty featured, the realistic outcome of an unprepared launch is a page that only people who switch to "All" will ever see. That is a reason to prepare properly — personal account created early, a Saturday if you lack an audience, a strong maker comment, real product access with no waitlist — and a reason to spread the same launch across other platforms that do not gate the homepage behind editorial review.

LetsLaunch is one of those. Launching is free, every launch gets a dated spot on a weekly board capped at 20 products, and there is no editorial featuring step: if your week has room, you are on it. The outbound link starts nofollow and becomes dofollow once our badge is on your site, which we explain in how it works. If you are lining up a Product Hunt launch, you can submit to LetsLaunch the same week and point the two launches at each other.
